POEM: The Buckskin--
As I sit here tonight, On the corral of lost dreams, I look not inside the pen,
But out as far as I can see. The young buckskin colt, Born wild, and
raised free, Stands out in the pasture, Staring back at me. I remember that not
too long ago, I gained his every trust. The way his soft sweet nicker, Would
echo through the dust. The pounding hooves of mustangs, suddenly brakes my
trance, I look back into the pasture, And see him joining the rest. He looks as
if he's happy, There's no where else he'd rather be. Then as the herd moves on,
He stops and stares at me. I send him a sweet smile, And he does the last thing
I expected. He didn't turn, And join the herd. But came galloping back toward
the shed. My heart started pounding, There was nothing I could do.
I had at last set him free. Yet he later returned to me. I shall never let him
go, Cause I know where it would lead, He would always be running, Galloping back
to me. -By Kelli Humbird
Favorite New Product: Mosquito
Killing System, Now is the time to
prepare for mosquitoes. Don't wait for a full-blown infestation. According to
the Centers for Disease Control, over 9,100 documented human cases of West Nile
virus were reported nationwide last year and 228 people died. The Centers for
Disease Control documented over 34,000 cases of equine West Nile virus in the
United States since 2001, with a 25 percent mortality rate. Eastern Equine
Encephalitis is not as prevalent as West Nile virus, but it is predicted to
spread to other states this year and the
fatality rate is 90 percent. It
is much easier to protect horses, people and pets when a mosquito control
program is in place at the beginning of
mosquito season. 573-896-2554 http://www.mosquitoincorporated.com.

RIDING LESSONS,
just released by Harper Collins. One of the main characters is a
seventeen-year-old horse rescued from a feedlot, and one of the primary motives
in writing the book was to raise awareness and
funds for PMU mares and foals--as well as the other horses who find
themselves in feedlots. Proceeds will help the charities listed on my Web site
at www.gruenzoo.com/horses.html.

Poem: Horsey
Days….Oh,
I remember those days,...That lift me like the golden suns rays,...Tuey
and I canter by,...He lifts his tail like he'll fly,
Horses! Ponies! Foals!...I LOVE THEM ALL!!!!! Janet Lane
Quote: Look
back at our struggle for freedom, trace our present day's strength to its
source; and you'll find man's pathway to glory is strewn with the bones of a
horse. Anonymous.MORE

Grooming Tip: A
combination of vinegar and olive oil can rejuvenate a sun-faded coat. Sponge it
on the horse from end to end and leave it for 3 days. Then give your horse a
warm, soapy bath and admire the results.
Training TIP: An
arched neck with ears pricked and lips and tail relaxed signals interest and
energy. Ears pointing up and back, mouth opened and tail held "kinked"
combine with the same arched neck is the signal of fear and alarm. The subtle
"smile" on a relaxed horse's lips, when stretched into a grimace,
changes contentment to dread. The soft chewing and lip smacking of horses
acquiescing to a trainer's request is easily translated to "I can
swallow that." Yet similar jaw movements, if magnified to the point of
tooth clacking mean "you scare me to death." Deb Bennett, PhD
